Toulouse Airport is 1 hr 20 mins; BA, Easyjet and Jet2. Pau airport is 1 hr and Carcassonne Airport is 1 hr 45 min; both Ryanair. All have car hire availability.
A host of activities are available; fishing, horse riding, lakes in the valleys and high mountains (with activities available and perfect for picnics after a good walk), hang gliding, any form of biking with stages of the Tour de France visiting every year, miles of tracks for forest walking. Luchon (twinned with Harrowgate) is packed with skiers and in the Summer sit and watch the world go by in the numerous pavement cafes. Walk in the mountains to 5000ft offering stunning photographic points that the average tourist will not find.
There are wine and cheese tasting opportunities. St Bertrand Cathedral is a must see. Barousse Apple wine and cider is produced locally. Lourdes is only an hour away or pop over to Spain, 30 minutes away for some Tapas. Every village has its own 'Fete'; see how the rural French enjoy life and there is a range of local markets to choose from. The Transhumance during June when animals journey to the high mountains for summer grazing.
There is plenty of widlife with marmot, ibis, brown bear, deer and vultures in the high mountains; kites, buzzard, hawks, jay and owls in the forests and valleys. There are also badgers, foxes and wild cats in their own natural habitat.
There is a bar/pizzeria restaurant and takeaway 5 minutes; a supermarket with fuel 12 minutes; a local shop with bakery 5 minutes, a very good local restaurant with outside terrace next to the river 2 minutes. Nearest large town with amenities 20 minutes. Timings all by car.
