Skiing holidays in Slovakia

The Western range of the Carpathian Mountains, including the Tatra and Beskids mountains have created some superb, though little known ski resorts in Slovakia. Hidden away from the rest of Europe for so many years Slovak ski resorts are now emerging to compete with other major European Ski resorts. The terrain is extensive, the scenery breathtaking, the slopes uncrowded and the prices relatively cheap – even in the most popular and well equipped resorts like Jasna, Chopok, Velka Raca and Jsenka. Alternative snow sports such as heli-skiing and ski-alpinism (a combination of cross-country, mountaineering and alpine skiing) are growing rapidly attracting a new generation of young, dedicated snow enthusiasts and helping to speed the development of specialist facilities. For intermediate level groups and couples who are more interested in the sport rather than the après-ski, Slovakia should be high on your hit list.

Skiing in the Zilinia region of Slovakia
The two main ski resorts in the region, Demaenova and Oscadnica are ideally located to reach three of Slovakia’s finest ski areas – Chopok/Jasna, Strbske Pleso and Zazriva Poroba.  All are well-equipped with a range of slopes to suit all levels. Also visit the outdoor museum in Liptov, the lovely city of Zilinia and the many weird and wonderful glacial grottoes of Dobsinsk l’adova.

Skiing in the Presov region of Slovakia
Dominated by the mountains of the Higher Tatras (2,655m), the ski resorts of Stary Smokovec, Tatranska and Hrebienok offer a wonderful landscape for cross-country and downhill skiing at intermediate level and above.

Skiing in the Banska Bystrica region of Slovakia
Situated in the southern slopes of the Lower Tatra mountains, the ski resorts in this region centre around Donovaly, Jesenka, Vlcianska Dolina and Cremosna.  Banska Bystrica is particularly good for expert skiers and more challenging cross-country enthusiasts.
