Spacious Traditional Charentais Farmhouse Close to the Coast

THE FARMHOUSE is in the village of L'Isle d'Etaules, about 8 miles from Royan and 5 miles from La Palmyre. The farmhouse sleeps 6 + baby comfortably.

ACCOMMODATION: The modernised 200+ year-old house comprises six rooms on two floors plus a large integral barn (chai). There is a large fully equipped kitchen, a separate laundry, 2 showers rooms and 2 WCs.

The 80 sq.m chai adjoins the main house at the rear. This space has been renovated and insulated and is used as a living area from May to October, where it is pleasantly cool when the weather is hot. All the rooms on the ground floor and in the chai are double-glazed.

The kitchen leads into a large sitting room where the Sky satellite/DVD system is located. The sitting room leads into a large double bedroom (5' bed) and also opens into the chai. There is also a CD player in the chai.

There is a separate shower room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The two bedrooms on the first floor each have an independent access.There is a large shower room and WC is situated on the mezzanine.

There is off road parking and the accessible ground goes back about 200 meters. The large gates in the arch can be closed and locked if required. The garden is enclosed by wire fences and wooden fences. An area directly behind the house is used for outside dining where there is a large purpose built BBQ. This area gets the morning sun. Another dining area is located beneath a walnut tree and is ideal for lunch.

LOCAL AREA. The house faces open countryside of vineyards and arable farmland. Accessible paths cross these areas southwards towards the Marais, and northwards to small clumps of woodland. Both are protected wild life areas. The nearest producer (100 metres) makes a white and rose Pineau de Charente, a pink sparkling wine (Cremant) and a vin de pays rose.

ETAULES is a small market town situated on the D14 on the way to the port of La Tremblade. The town has a variety of shops and there is a market once a week on Thursday which includes an excellent sea-food stall. The town is quite prosperous but has retained its traditional nineteenth century character.

BEACHES. A short drive away to the west and southwest are the wide sandy beaches and large areas of pine forest which extend from the coast inland.

OYSTERS AND MOULES.To the north is the river Seudre, on the banks of which are many small ports and oyster parks (Parc a Huitres). The Marennes Basin is renowned throughout France for its oysters and moules.

CYCLING.The surrounding countryside is quiet and can be explored by bike. In particular there is a long coastal path exclusively dedicated to cycling.

The Syndicate d'Initiative (tourist office) in Etaules is next to the Marie.

TRAVEL. Train : London-Royan (7 hrs). Air: RyanAir and Flybe go to La Rochelle & BA to Bordeaux.
